About Us
Lucy, our store manager hard at work!
Sakonnet Purls has been owned and operated by Louise Silverman since June of 1985. Sakonnet Purls has been and continues to be a haven for knitters, weavers and other needleworkers.

People from across the street and across the country come to the charming 18th century farmhouse, located in Historic Tiverton Four-Corners (Newport County, RI), to explore a wide variety of knitting products. With more than 170 yarns in just about any color you can imagine, you'll find the largest selection of natural fibers available in New England.

At Sakonnet Purls, our goal has always been to supply our customers with the finest yarns available. Even if you can't find what you need here, if it's out there, we'll try to find it for you.

As you explore our site, please feel free to visit our FAQs page for more information, our Sales Shed section for current specials, or Contact Us with any questions or ideas you may have. And if you ever do find yourself in Rhode Island, we hope you plan a visit to our pastoral community and to Sakonnet Purls. If you do, bring your knitting needles and be sure and say hello to our beloved cat Lucy, Sakonnet Purl's unofficial store manager and night watchman. In the meantime, thank you for visiting Sakonnet Purls online. We hope you enjoy your stay.

  • YANKEE, 1998
Knitters from across the country come to Sakonnet Purls to find thousands of skeins, hanks and balls of every imaginable fiber and color. Louise Silverman has the largest selection of natural fiber in New England - silky merino wool, alpace, llama, mohair, blends, and machine-washable wools specially designed for babies. You'll find lots of patterns, including Louise's own "Friendly Patterns for the Average Knitter", with easy instructions color-coded according to size.

  • HOUSE & GARDEN, 2001
One day, as I was driving to the Rhode Island shore for the thousandth time, I noticed a little shingled house in Tiverton with knitting needles on a sign over the door. Sakonnet Purls. It was a rainy, dull day in the middle of winter, and there seemed something very cozy about the vision that popped into my mind, of balls of yarn tumbling around my feet as I sat at the hearth, needles clacking, fire crackling. I parked and went in to find two women, a mother and a daughter, at a desk, talking and laughing and knitting companionably. The walls and floors of three rooms were spinning with color, every shade you have ever seen, twisted and tucked into cubbies, spilling out of baskets. Dominique Browning, Editor

  • RHODE ISLAND MONTHLY, 2003
Sakonnet Purls calls itself "the most complete knitting and needlework store in the USA." After a visit, it's easy to see why. The store, located in an eighteenth-century farmhouse, features 170 yarns in all fibers and weights from wools to silks, cashmeres to cottons, dozens of patterns for sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens, gloves, doll clothing, Christmas stockings, even dog sweaters, plus needles, books and accessories. Owner Louise Silverman, herself a lifelong knitter, promises that if you can't find what you're after in the store, they'll custom order it for you. We're signing up for one of their beginner knitter classes.

  • Named Rhode Island Monthly's "Best Knitting Supplies" store (August 2003)
